The circular economy and climate-neutral urban development are the key prerequisites for a sustainable future for our cities. However, corresponding approaches and experiences are comparatively new. Through the “Young Professionals Shape the Future” programme, students from eleven universities developed ideas for the transformation of the built environment, which must be organised spatially and materially in circular processes, in courses and a national winter school. The young planners strive for CO2-neutral solutions in urban development and focus on digitalisation, resource efficiency and local commitment to change. They confidently shape resource cycles by utilising obsolete urban spaces as potential for inner city development and transforming them as sustainable urban spaces.
